源自拉丁文 flectere, to bend 弯曲

也许您有些迷惑吧，为什么 flect, flex 长相殊异，却意义相同？

其实，两者来同一拉丁字 flecto （ I bend ）的不同形式：

现在不定式： flect ere → 词干 flect-

动名词： flex um → 词干 flex-

★ flex   vt . 弯曲，伸缩，折曲 vi . 弯曲 n . 屈曲，折曲

﹡ The gardeners flexed their muscles and began to dig. 园丁们舒腰展臂后才开始挖地。

★ re flect   v. 反射；反映；反省，深思

｛ re-, back 回 ＋ -flect, to bend 弯曲 → 弯曲回来 → 反射；反映 → 反省，深思｝

* The sunlight was reflected in the water. 日光由水面反射出来。 (vt.)

* Her sad looks reflected the thought passing through her mind. 她忧戚的面容反映出她内心的思想。 (vt.)

* I tried to reflect on what was happening to me. 我努力试图对我周围发生的事情进行反思。 (vi.)

* After long reflection we decided to buy the house. 经过很长一段时间的慎重考虑 , 我们决定买下那所房子。

* The moon is bright only by reflection . 月亮靠反射发光。

* One can see the reflection of the tower in the water. 塔的影子倒映在水中。

☆ reflect ive   adj. 沉思的，熟虑的

｛ reflect 沉思 ＋ -ive 形容词字尾，表示「～的」 → 沉思的，熟虑的｝

* He was in a calm and reflective mood. 他显得平静而又有所思。

☆ reflect or   n. 反射物，反射器

｛ -or, person or thing 名词字尾，表「人或物」｝

* The newspaper is a true reflector of public opinion. 报纸是舆论的真实反映。

★ de flect  v. 偏斜，使转向；偏离

｛ de-, reverse 倒转＋ -flect, to bend 弯曲 → 使转向 → 偏斜，使转向；偏离｝

* The missile deflected from its path. 导弹已偏离轨道。 {missile [ 5mIsl ] n. 导弹 } (vi.)

* The bullet struck a wall and was deflected from its course. 子弹击中墙壁而改变了方向。 (vt.)

☆ deflect ion  n. 偏斜，转向；偏差

｛ -ion, result of an action or process 表「行为或过程的结果」｝

* The smallest deflection of the missile could bring disaster. 导弹极微小偏斜也可能酿出大祸。

★ genu flect   v. 屈膝，跪拜（尤指做宗教仪式时）

｛ genu- , knee [ 医 ] 膝 ＋ -flect, to bend 弯曲 → 膝盖弯曲 → 屈膝，跪拜｝

☆ genuflect ion   n. 曲膝，屈服

｛ -ion, result of an action or process 表「行为或过程的结果」｝

★ in flect   vt. 使弯曲，使曲折；词尾变化

｛ in- (= en- ) ， to cause to be 「使～」｝

* By inflecting the voice more one can hold the attention of an audience. 讲话声音有些抑扬变化可以吸引住听众的注意力。

* Most English verbs are inflected with “-ed” in the past tense. 英语大多数动词过去式词尾均变化为 -ed 的形式。

☆ inflect ion   n. 弯曲；屈折变化

* We decided to stop the boat in the inflection of the river. 我们决定将船停在河的弯曲之处。

* We usually end questions with a rising inflection . 通常我们在疑问句结尾把音调提高。

★ flex ible  adj. 易弯曲的，柔韧的；灵活的

｛ flex-, to bend 弯曲 ＋ -ible 形容词字尾，表「易于～的」 → 易弯曲的，柔韧的 → 灵活的｝

* This tube is flexible but tough. 这管子柔软但很坚固。

* We need a foreign policy that is more flexible . 我们需要一个更为灵活的外交政策。

☆ flex ibility   n. 弹性；灵活性

｛ -ibility 名词字尾｝

* This kind of rubber has a good flexibility . 这种橡胶弹性很好。 {rubber [ 5rQbL ] n. 橡胶 }

* We thank your flexibility in dealing with this matter. 我们感谢您处理这件事的灵活性。

☆ in flexible  adj. 不易弯曲的；坚定不移的

｛ in-, not 不｝

* The new plastic is completely inflexible . 这种新塑料没有一点儿弹性。

* He was inflexible once he had made a decision. 他一旦作了决定就不会轻易更改。

★ circum flex   adj. 音调符号，声调符号

｛ circum-, around 环绕，旋绕｝

★ de flex   vt. 使向下弯曲

｛ de-, down 向下｝

* It was said that the little boy deflexed these young plants. 据说是那个小男孩弄弯了这些幼苗。

☆ deflex ed   adj. 向下弯曲的

｛ -ed 用于动词后面，构成形容词｝

* deflexed petals 外折的花萼

☆ deflex ibility   n. 向下弯曲

｛ -ibility 名词字尾｝

★ re flex  adj. & n. 反射（的）；反应（的）

｛ re-, back 回 ＋ -flex, to bend 弯曲 → 弯曲回来 → 反射的；反应的｝

* It’s just a dog’s reflex movement. 这正是狗的反射运动。 (adj.)

* Her hand hit my nose and eyes, and tears came in my eyes from the reflex . 她的手打在我鼻子和眼睛上，反应之下我的泪水立刻涌上眼来。 (n.)

☆ reflex ive   adj. （语法）反身的

｛ -ive 形容词或名词字尾，表示「～的」｝

* The reflexive verb is usually stressed. For emphasis, the syllable –self/-selves of the reflexive pronoun may be stressed. 反身动词通常须重读。为加强语气，反身代词中的 -self/-selves 这个音节可以重读。

genu 意为 knee ( 膝盖 ) ，长得与一个我们熟悉的单词 genu ine ( 真的 ← 生 来就这样 ) 蛮像，两者有关系吗？

古罗马有个风俗，父亲把新生儿放在他的膝 (knee) 上以表示他承认这孩子是他亲生的 (birth) 。

所以，看似风马牛不相及的两个概念：膝盖 (knee) 与出生 (birth) 同出一辙。
