lim, limit
源自拉丁语名词 l ī mes 及其属格 (genitive) l ī mitis, boundary, border 界限，边界。
★ lim es n. 古罗马边境的城墙
★ limit n. 界限，限制 vt. 限制，限定
* There’s a weight limit on the bridge. 这座桥有重量限制。 (n.)
* He must limit the number of cigarettes he smokes. 他必须限制他抽烟的数目。 {cigarette n. 香烟 } (vt.)
☆ limit ation n. 限制，限度
｛ -ation, state or condition 名词字尾，表「状态或情况」｝
* The government has imposed limitation on imports. 政府已经对进口加以了限制。
☆ il limit able adj. 无限的，无穷的
｛ il-, in 表否定，「不，无」 ＋ limit 限制 ＋ -able 形容词字尾，表「能～的，可～的」 → 无限的，无穷的｝
* the illimitable reaches of space and time 空间与时间的无边无际
☆ limit less adj . 无限的；无止境的
｛ -less 表示否定的字尾｝
* the limitless reaches of outer space 对外太空的无限追踪

从字面意思看，“ the sky"s the limit ”即 「 天空是你的界限 」 。在古人的印象中，天是很高很远的，所以如果把天作为界限，那跟没有界限也差不多了。后来，这种说法被引申到很多其他领域，意思就是“ the possibilities are endless. 一切皆有可能”。是不是让你想起了 ADIDAS 的广告“ Impossible is nothing ”？
