源自拉丁文 firmus, firm 坚固的 ， 坚定的

★ firm   adj. 坚定的；坚固的，稳定的 n. 公司

* a firm belief 坚定的信念

* You must always build on firm ground. 你必须始终脚踏实地。 (adj.)

* I am writing in regard to employment with your firm . 我现致函贵公司求职。 (n.)

★ in firm   adj. 体弱的，虚弱的

* She’s old and infirm and has to keep to the house. 她因年老体弱而足不出户。

-ary 表示「地点，场所」，再举例加以说明：

☆ dispens ary   n. 医务室，药房 ｛ dis-, out 出，向外 + pens-, to weigh 称｝

★ fix  vt. 固定，安装；修理；安排，决定

* to fix a picture on the wall 把画钉在墙上

* to fix a date for a meeting 决定开会日期

☆ fix ture  n. 固定装置，设备

｛ fixt, fix 的过去式及过去分词 + -ure , action, result, condition 名词字尾，表「动作，结果，状态」｝

* The price of the house included all fixtures and fittings. 房价包括所有的固定装置和设备。

★ pre fix  n. 前缀

｛ pre-, before 前面 ＋ -fix, to fasten 固定 → 固定在前面的部分 → 前缀｝

* “Non-” is a negative prefix . “ Non- ”是一个否定前缀。 {negative [ 5nZ^EtIv ] adj. 否定的 }

☆ suf fix  n. 后缀

｛ suf- = sub-, behind 后面｝

* The suffix -er is added to verbs to form nouns. 字尾 -er 加到动词之后构成名词。

★ af fix   vt. 附加，粘贴

｛ af- (= ad-) , near 在～附近 ＋ -fix, to fasten 固定 → 固定到某物附近 → 附加，粘贴｝

* Affix the stamp to the upper right corner of the envelope. 把邮票贴在信封右上角。 {envelope [ 5ZnvE7lop ] n. 信封 }

｛ fix-, to bond 束缚 ＋ -a tion, action, course, result 名词字尾，表「动作、过程或结果」 → 固恋｝

｛ -ity, state, quality 名词字尾，表「状态或特性」｝

* She displayed great fixity of purpose. 她目标始终如一。

★ in fix  vt. 灌输，嵌入

｛ in-, into 进入 ＋ fix, to fasten 固定 → 固定进去 → 插入，嵌入 → 灌输｝

* to infix an idea in someone’s mind 将观念灌输到某人脑中

-ure 名词字尾，构成抽象名词，表「行为，结果，状态，情形」等，又如：

☆ cult ure  n. 文化，文明 ｛ cult-, 耕耘，培植，培育。来自拉丁语 colore （耕耘）的过去分词 cultus ，因为文化修养和种庄稼一样，必须经过辛勤的耕耘和培育。｝

☆ fail ure   n. 失败 ｛ fail 失败｝

☆ pleas ure  n. 愉 快， 快 乐，高兴 ｛ please 使～高兴 ｝

-ure 还可以表示实物名词或机构团体，如：

☆ furnit ure  n. 家具 ｛ furnish 布置家具，配备家具。 -iture = -ure ，又如： expend iture （花费，消耗）， garn iture （装饰品）， gen iture （产生，诞生）， invest iture （授权仪式）， divest iture （脱衣，剥夺）｝

☆ pict ure   n. 画 ｛ pict-, 画｝

☆ legislat ure  n. 立法机 关， 立法机构 ｛ legis-, law 法律，源自拉丁语 lex ( law ) + -lat-, bring, bear 产生，承担 + -ure ｝
