源自拉丁文 lifian, live, life 生活；生命。

v, f 清浊辅音的互换，这在英语构词中是普遍现象。

★ liv e  adj. 活的；实况转播的 v. 活，生存；居住；生活

｛ -e, 字尾｝

* The doctors said she had only six months to live . 医生说她只剩下六个月可活了。 (vi.)

* She lives about ten miles from my house. 她的住处离我家约十英里远。 (vi.)

* I lived a happy life. 我过着幸福的生活。 (vt.)

* That is a live fish. 那是条活鱼。 (adj.)

* It wasn’t a recorded show; it was live . 那不是录音节目，是实况转播。 (adj.)

｛ liv-, to live 居住 ＋ -able 形容词字尾，表「能～的，可～的」 → 可居住的｝

* a livable place 适于居住的地方

｛ a-, intensive prefix 加强词意 ＋ live 活的 → 活着的 → 有生气的｝

* He is still alive . 他仍然活着。

｛ liv-, live 活的 ＋ -en, cause to become 动词字尾，表「使～」 → 使有生气，使活跃｝

※ –en, 做动词字尾，又如： weaken ( 削弱 ) ， deepen ( 加深 ) ， broaden ( 加宽 ) 。

* She livened up when Alan asked her to dance. 艾伦请她跳舞她便来了精神。 (vi.)

* Put some music on to liven things up. 放些音乐活跃一下气氛吧。 (vt.)

* During the earthquake many lives were lost. 地震中死了许多人。

* His way of life is rather simple. 他的生活方式相当简朴。

☆ life less  adj. 无生气的；无生命的

｛ life 生命；生气 ＋ -less, not 无 → 无生气的 → 无生命的｝

* When he spoke, his voice was lifeless . 当他再开口时，声音又软弱无力了。

* Lifeless bodies from the airplane crash lay on the ground. 空难者的尸体躺在地上。

☆ life like  adj. 逼真的，栩栩如生的

｛ life 生气 ＋ -like, have the quality of 形容词字尾，表「具有～性质的」 → 逼真的，栩栩如生的｝

* The artist had etched a lifelike horse. 这位艺术家蚀刻出一匹栩栩如生的骏马。 {etch vt. 蚀刻 }

☆ after life n. 来世；余生，晚年，后半生

｛ after 在～之后 ＋ life 生命 → 来世；晚年｝

* People of many religions believe in an afterlife . 很多宗教的信徒都相信来生。

* What happened to that woman in afterlife ? 那女人后半生的生活怎样？

☆ mid life  n. 中年

｛ mid-, middle 中间｝

* His parents divorced in their midlife . 他父母在中年时离婚了。

表示 life, alive 的字根还有： viv-, vit-, anim-, bio- 等，如：

☆ sur viv e  v. 幸存，活下来；比～活得长

｛ sur-, over, beyond 超过 ＋ -viv-, to live 活 ＋ -e, 字尾 → to live over or beyond 比～活得长 → 幸存，活下来｝

☆ vit amin  n. 维生素

｛ vit-, life 生命 ＋ -amin(e) amino acid 氨基酸 → 产生生命的氨基酸 → 维生素｝

☆ anim al  n. 动物 ｛有生命的物体， -al 表示人或物的名词字尾，有如： rival ( 竞争者 ) ， signal ( 信号 ), dial ( 日晷 ) ， mural ( 壁画 ) ， hospital ( 医院 ) ｝

☆ bio graphy  n. 传记

｛ bio-, life 生命 ＋ -graph, to write 写 ＋ -y 名词字尾 → 书写生命 → 传记｝

☆ bring something to life 使更生动；使更有趣；使更吸引

﹡ If you put a couple of pictures on the wall it might bring the room to life a bit. 如果在墙上挂几幅画，整个房间会显得更有生气。
