　　爱思英语沙龙第二十三期讨论的话题是：Liberal Arts: An Unique American College Experience，翻译成中文就是：感受独特的美国文理学院。 
　　 
　　本期主题分享嘉宾Michael & Chongchong目前就读于美国两所著名的Liberal arts college。一位在成都度假，一位在成都实习。他们用自己的亲身体验给参与此次爱思英语沙龙的朋友展示了独具特色的美国本科教育。

　　A "liberal arts" institution can be defined as a "college or university curriculum aimed at imparting general knowledge and developing general intellectual capacities, in contrast to a professional, vocational, or technical curriculum." 
　　 
　　The “liberal arts college experience” in the US is characterized by three main aspects that demarcate it from undergraduate experiences in other countries: 
　　 
　　(1) smaller size than universities, which usually means more individual attention is given to each student; 
　　 
　　(2) residential, which means students live and learn away from home, often for the first time, and learn to live well with others. Additionally, the residential experience of living on campus brings a wide variety of cultural, political, and intellectual events to students who might not otherwise seek them out in a non-residential setting; and 
　　 
　　(3) a typically two-year exploration of the liberal arts or general knowledge before declaring a major.

　　这次沙龙让我深刻感受到了“Translators are traitors"(翻译就是叛逆，意即翻译很多时候不能表达原文的意思） 
　　 
　　比如： 
　　Liberal arts college 翻译成 文理学院 
　　Private College 私立学院 民办高校 
　　 
　　国内也有许多所谓的“文理学院”，尤其是挂着公立大学牌子实际是私立或民办的所谓二级学院或独立学院。 
　　 
　　在中文里，民办高校或私立学院一般带有负面意义。老板们多以赚钱而且是赚快钱为目的成立的所谓教育机构。 
　　 
　　所以如果你在中国读的是一所名叫”文理学院“的民办高校，和你在美国读的a private liberal arts college，是完全不同的两种学校，两种感受，两种收获。 
　　 
　　国内的所有高校都拼命想做大的，如果实在没有做大可以先把名字做大，比如都叫univerisity的时候，我们是不是应该把目光投向美国的liberal arts college，在那里，小才是美的，小才能保证愉快的学习经历，小才能让你感受到你受到关注和关怀。Small is beautiful. 
　　 
　　我们不妨想象一下，在一个有数万学生的大学，一进校你就被编入某个专业的某一个班，在这个班里有数十人甚至上百人，大家上着同样的课程，你只是一个学号，你的老师甚至都不知道你的名字，因为他得给很多人上课，走在校园里，都是陌生人。有时需要到办公室办点事盖个章啥，遇到的都是横眉冷对。这样的”大“学不要也罢。 
　　 
　　而在一个只有千人的liberal arts college，课程可以自由选择，专业不需一开始就定下来，你可以游走在不同的课堂，认识不同的朋友，走在校园，不时有熟悉的面孔和你打招呼，课堂里人也不多，老师不仅能叫出每个人的名字，还熟悉每个人的与众不同的特点，到办公室办事，工作人员都很友好很合作。不时会收到老师或学校工作人员的邮件，向你传递真诚的问候或学校最新的消息。时不时地你会收到校友的邮件，有的已经毕业五十年了，你感觉有归属感，你感觉是一个大家庭的一部分，而且这是一个有历史感的温暖的大家庭。从此，你不孤单。 
　　 
　　Liberal Arts College in the US，吾心向往，可惜廉颇老矣！
