Flowers carry all kinds of symbolism, and this is with other cultures. So please be careful when you present them to friends from different countries.

1. Flowers of Death

White flowers are regarded as a symbol of death in Japan, Korea and other Asian countries; the same with Purple flowers in Mexico and Brazil. White chrysanthemums (菊花) are the also the flower of death in many European countries.

2. Number of Flowers

Remember that it is considered bad luck in many European countries to give an even number (偶数) of flowers. Therefore, please always present an odd number, except 13 of course.

3. Wrapping of Flowers

It is a customary to wrap our gifts including the flowers. But when you present the flowers to a person from Germany, you"d better un-wrap the bouquet first.

 4. Troublesome Roses

Red roses usually signal strong romantic interests, so giving red roses suggest that you are interested in developing a romantic relationship. However, in fact, throughout history, the rose signals "secrecy". Think of the Latin word sub rosa, which means secret, and note that many confessional booths (忏悔室) in Catholic churches(天主教堂) have cravings of roses above the door.
