佳作欣赏：A Memorable Scene on Campus

A profusion of memorable scenes can be observed on campus. The one I am thinking of particularly is hundreds of thousands of students heading for the canteen right after class.

As the tinkling and banging of the bell impinges on the students ear, the sepulchral campus suddenly starts to come alive. Throngs of students thread the way among crowds of competitors, clearing a way for themselves through the once seemingly broad roadway which is narrowed by swarms of starving students at this time of day. The din of crying their hunger and talking vigorously about the previous classes is continious and makes any passer-by dizzy. As one penetrates deeper through the streams of people which extends as far as the eye can see, the noise becomes louder and more chaotic; the earthen floor, beaten hard by the innumerable footsteps, trails off the sound of the daily turbulence. Most of the students are in a hurry, half walking half running, for fear of the conjestion. Others, however, move at a leisurely pace enjoying the pleasing scenery along the road.

The canteen, on the other hand, is honeycombed by students coming from all directions. Dishes of every conceiable kind displayed on the shelves catch hundreds of eager eyes. Veteran staff cries rhymically to the strokes of ladles. To get the food one wants, he has to line up. It couldn’t be more torturous to stand in an incredibly long queue and then find that the paying card is not there. Such a thing is the order of the day for the careless. The happiest moment must be getting the long waiting food. Whether it’s sumptuous Gongbao Chicken or humble steamed bread, it can be regarded as the fruit of the daily struggling battle.
