iBT Reading Question: Reference (Plug it in!)
Reference questions ask you to simply think about one part of speech: nouns. Before looking at the answer choices, read the sentence with the reference word in it and pay attention to the nouns in the sentence (usually before the reference word). Then think of those nouns in the place of the reference word. Does it make sense with the words surrounding it? This quick step will give you an idea of what the answer might be or at the very least of which nouns it definitely isn’t in that particular sentence. Then look at the answer choices and if it still isn’t clear, then plug in the answer choices. You should be able to at least get it down to two answer choices from here and pick the best one.
