源自拉丁文 latus, side; wide, broad 边；宽。

★ latus  边，弦（复数： latera ）

★ lat itude  n. 纬度

｛ lat-, wide 宽 ＋ -itude, 抽象名词字尾 → 宽度 → 纬度｝

* The latitude of the island is 20 degrees south. 该岛的纬度是南纬 20 度。

★ later al  adj. 横的，侧面的

｛ later-, side 边 ＋ -al, of 形容词字尾，表「～的」 → 一边的 → 横的，侧面的｝

* lateral buds, shoots, branches 侧芽、侧条、侧枝

* The cat dilated its eyes. 猫瞪大了双眼。 (vt.)

※ -itude 做抽象名词字尾，表示「情况，状态，性质」，又如：

☆ alt itude  n . ( 尤指海拔 ) 高 度， 高处 ( 海拔甚高的地方 ) ， ( 等 级， 地位等 ) 高等 ｛ alt-, high 高的｝

☆ apt itude  n . 恰当，智能，聪明，自然倾向 ｛ apt 有～倾向的｝

☆ fin itude  n . 界 限， 限制 ｛ fin-, limit, end 极限，端点｝

☆ correct itude  n . 端 正， 有礼有节 ｛ cor- = con-, intensive pref. 加强语义的字首 + -rect-, upright, right 直的，正确的 + -itude ｝
