源自拉丁文 fides, faith, trust 忠实，信任。

★ con fid ent   adj. 自信的；确信的

｛ con-, intensive prefix 加强词意的字首 ＋ -fid-, to trust 信任 ＋ -ent 构成形容词，表「性质，动作」 → 有信心的 → 自信的；确信的｝

* He felt confident in the future. 他对未来充满信心。

* I am confident of his coming. 我确信他会来。

☆ confid ence  n. 信心；信任

｛ -ence, action 名词字尾，表「动作」｝

* The actress walked on to the stage with great confidence . 女演员满有信心地走上舞台。

* The teacher enjoyed his students’ confidence . 这老师深得学生们的信任。

★ con fid ential   adj. 秘密的，机密的；亲密的，心腹的

｛ -ial (= -al), relating to 形容词字尾，表「与～有关的」｝｝

* a confidential letter 一封密信

* He told me the confidential information. 他向我透露了这个秘密信息。

* We sent for my confidential clerk. 们把我的亲信书记找了来。

★ con fid e  v. 信赖，信任；倾诉，吐露

★ dif fid ent   adj. 缺乏自信的，胆怯的

｛ dif- ( = dis- ) , not 不 ＋ -fid-, to trust 相信 ＋ -ent 构成形容词，表「性质，动作」 → 不相信自己的 → 缺乏自信的，胆怯的｝

* She is diffident about expressing her opinions. 她怯于表述自己的意见。

☆ diffid ence  n. 缺乏自信

｛ -ence, action 名词字尾，表「动作」｝

* He has diffidence in expressing his opinions. 他表达意见时缺乏自信。

★ de fy   vt. 违抗，藐视

｛ de-, denoting reversal 表示相反，否定 ＋ -fy, to trust 相信 → 不相信 → 违抗，藐视｝ cf. denationalize ( 非国有化 ) ， de militarize ( 使非军事化 ) ， de struction ( 破坏 ) ， de mobilize 复员 (mobilize 动员 )

* If you defy the law, you may find yourself in prison. 如果藐视法律，就可能会坐牢。

｛ -ance , state, quality or action 名词字尾，表 「 状态、性质或动作 」 ｝

* He gave false proof, which set the court at defiance . 他出示假证据，这就是蔑视法庭。

☆ defi ant   adj. 不顺从的，挑衅的，目中无人

｛ -ant, state, condition 形容词字尾，表「状态或情况」｝

* a defiant child 不顺从的孩子

* She talked to us with a defiant manner. 她用蔑视的态度和我们说话。

★ fid elity  n. 忠实，忠诚

｛ fid-, to trust 相信 ＋ -el, full 形容词字尾，充满的 ＋ -ity 构成名词，表「性质」｝

* fidelity to one’s spouse 对配偶的忠实

* There is nothing like a dog’s fidelity. 没有什么能比得上狗的忠诚。

☆ in fidelity   n. 不贞，不贞的行为，不忠实

｛ in-, not 表示否定｝

* She closed her eyes to her husband’s infidelities. 她对丈夫的出轨行为视而不见。

﹡ 也许您会觉得“ -elity ”怪怪的，不错哦！是蛮少见的。不过，我告诉你啦，英语中基本上就只有这两个字是这样子。不信您去查辞典，找出第三个才怪啦！

★ per fid ious   adj. 不忠的，背信弃义的

｛ per-, denoting destruction, ill effect 表示 「 毁坏，变坏 」 ＋ -fid-, to trust 信任 ＋ -ious, having the qualities of 形容词字尾，表示「具有～性质的」 → 得不到信任的 → 不忠的，背信弃义的｝ cf. perdition ( 毁灭 ) ， per vert ( 反常 )

* The company was betrayed by its perfidious allies. 这家公司遭背信弃义的盟友出卖了。 {betray [ bI5tre ] vt. 出卖 }

☆ perfid y  n. 不忠，不义

｛ -y, quality of 名词字尾，表性质｝

* The man’s perfidy never reaches a limit. 这个人的背信弃义永无止境。

-ance = -ancy ，抽象名词字尾，与形容词字尾 -ant 相对应，表示「状态、情况及性质」等，不少词同時具有 - ance 和 - ancy 两种形式，如：

☆ assist ance   n . 帮助，协助

☆ const ancy  n . 坚定不移，持久不变；忠实，忠贞

☆ compli ancy   n . 依 从， 顺从

☆ endur ance  n . 耐力

☆ eleg ance  n . 优雅
