源自拉丁文 liquidus 和 liqiere, fluid 流体，液体。

★ liqu id  n. 液体 adj. 液体的，液态的

｛ liqu-, fluid 液体 ＋ -id, of 形容词字尾，表「具有某种性的；如～的；含有～」 → 液体的，液态的｝

※ -id 做形容词字尾，又如： fluid ( 液体 ) ， fervid ( 热心的 ) ， frigid ( 寒冷的 ) 。

* Water is a liquid . 水是液体。 (n.)

* The doctor suggested that the patient be fed liquid food. 医生建议病人应吃流质食物。 (adj.)

☆ liquid ity  n. 流动性；流动资产

｛ -ity, quality 名词字尾，表「性质」｝

* The company has good liquidity . 该公司的资产流动性好。

* The bank has progressively increased its liquidity . 银行逐渐地增加其流动资产。

☆ liquid ize  vt. 使 榨成汁状

｛ -ize, to make 动词字尾，表「使～」｝

* I liquidize an apple every morning. 我每天早上都榨一杯苹果汁。

★ liqu or  n. 酒，烈性酒

｛ liqu-, fluid 液体 ＋ -or, thing 名词字尾，表「物」 → 酒，烈性酒｝

* He appears to have drunk a lot of liquor . 他似乎喝得醉醺醺的。

又如： luminescent ( 发光的 ) ， efflorescent ( 开花的 ) ， obsolescent ( 逐渐被废弃的 ) 等。

* Ice is liquescent when it is heated. 冰加热时易液化。

★ liquid ate  v. 清除，消灭；清偿，结算

｛ liquid 液体 ＋ -ate, cause to become 动词字尾，表「使～」 → 用液体清洗 → 清除，清算｝

* All his supporters were liquidated . 他的支持者全都被消灭了。

* The government made every effort to stabilize the economy by liquidating the national debt. 政府以清偿国家债务力谋稳定经济。 {stabilize vt. 使稳定 }

☆ liquid ation  n. （公司等的）停业清理，清算

｛ -ation, action, process 名词字尾，表「行动或过程」｝

* The firm may be forced into liquidation . 这个公司可能会被迫停业清算。

表示 flow ( 流 ) 的字根还有拉丁字根： flu-, fluct-, flux- ，如：

☆ flux  n. 流动 → 不断变动
