源自拉丁文 littera, letter 文字，字母。

★ liter al  adj. 照字面的，按原义的；刻板的

｛ liter-, letter 文字 ＋ -al, of 形容词字尾，表「～的」 → 照文字的 → 照字面的，按原义的 → 刻板的｝

* Don’t stop at the literal meaning of the word. 不要停留在这个字的表面意义上。

* His interpretation of the music was rather too literal . 那音乐他演奏得未免太乏味了。 {interpretation  n. 演出，演奏 }

★ liter ature  n. 文学作品

* Good literature quickens the imagination. 好的文学作品能激发想像力。

★ liter ate  adj. 识字的；有文化修养的 n. 有文化的人

★ liter ary  adj. 文学的

｛ liter-, letter 文字 ＋ -ary, relating to 形容词字尾，表「与～有关的」 → 文学的｝

cf. necess ary ( 必要的，必需的，必然的 ) ， plen ary [ 无限制的；全权的（政府权利）；全体出席的（会议） ] ， arbitr ary ( 专横的，武断的 )

* His style is a bit too literary for my taste. 依我看他的文笔书卷气重了一点。

☆ literat or  n. 文人，作家

｛ literat(e) 有文化的 ＋ -or, person 名词字尾，表人 → 文人，作家｝

* A good literator must have a first-rate imagination. 一位优秀的作家必定有一流的想象力。

☆ liter acy  n. 识字

｛ -acy, state, quality 名词字尾，表「状态或性质」｝

cf. priv acy ( 秘密独处；隐私 ) ， determin acy ( 决定性 ) ， conspir acy ( 合谋 )

* All the children are tested in basic literacy . 所有孩子都参加基本读写能力测试。

☆ il literacy  n. 文盲

｛ il-, in 表否定，「不，无」｝

* Illiteracy rates have fallen in recent years. 近年来文盲率已在下降。

★ ob liter ate  vt. 涂去，擦掉，使消失；彻底毁灭

｛ ob-, 表否定，取消＋ -liter-, letter 文字 ＋ -ate, to make 动词字尾，表「使～」 → 去掉文字 → 涂去，擦掉，使消失｝

* The sand-storm obliterated his footprints. 沙暴掩埋掉了他的脚印。

* The city was totally obliterated by the bomb. 这个城市被炸弹夷为平地。

☆ obliter ation  n. 涂去，删除

｛ -ation, action, result 名词字尾，表「动作或结果」｝

* The result of these invasions was the near obliteration of ancient Egypt. 这几次入侵使古代埃及几遭毁灭。 {invasion  n. 入侵 }

ob- 是一个意思较丰富的字首，如：

1 、表 against 「 对着，反对，逆着 」 ，如：

☆ ob stacle n. 障碍，妨害物 ｛ ob- + st-, stand 站立 + -acle, 名词字尾 → 对着 / 逆着站立 → 妨碍，阻碍｝ cf. mir acle ( 奇 迹， 奇事 ) ， spect acle ( 观览物，展览物，公开展示，奇观，景象，光景 )

2 、表示颠倒，倒转，如：

☆ ob cordate  adj. [ 植 ] 倒心形的 ｛ ob- + -cord-, heart 心 + -ate 形容词字尾 ( 如前例 ) ｝

3 、表示否定，如： obliterate ( 见上 )

4 、表加强意义，如：

☆ ob lige  vt. 迫使，责成 ｛ ob- + -lig-, band 捆绑 + -e 字尾｝

☆ to the letter 不折不扣地，严格地，一丝不苟地，精确地

这个问题可能有些简单吧。可是， LOVE 的确不是一个简单的问题，只是因为当下太多人太轻浮地、功利地对待它。
