源自拉丁文 fari, speak, tell 说。

【来龙去脉】

※ fa- 源自拉丁语单字 for （ I say, speak ）的不定式 fa ri 的词干 fa- ；

※ fat- 源自拉丁语单字 for （ I say, speak ）的动名词 fat um 的词干 fat- 。

※ fant-

infant （婴儿） 源自拉丁语 infans （ speechless 说不出话的） 的属格（所有格）形式 infantis 的词干 infant 。｛ in-, not 不。 fans 是 for (I speak, say) 的现在分词｝

※ fabul- 源自拉丁语动词 fabulor 的不定式 fabulari 的词干 fabul-;

※ fam- 源自拉丁语名词 fama (fame 名声 , rumor 谣言 , reputation 名声 ) 的词干 fam- 。

★ fabl e   n. 寓言；传说，神话

｛ fabl-, to speak 说 ＋ -e 字尾 → 一代一代口述流传下来的故事 → 寓言；传说，神话｝

※ 源自 古法语 fable ← 拉丁语 fabula (story, play, fable) ← 拉丁语 fari (speak, tell)

* He had some motive in telling this fable . 他讲这寓言故事是有用意的。

* We may take the story of Job for a history or a fable . 我们可以把约伯的故事当作历史或传说。

★ af fab le  adj. 易于交谈的，亲切的，和蔼的

｛ af-, towards 朝、向 ＋ -fab-, to speak 说 ＋ -(ab)le, can 能～的 → 能与之交谈的 → 易于交谈的，亲切的，和蔼的｝

* He found her parents very affable . 他觉得她父母很好说话。

☆ aff ability   n. 和蔼，亲切

｛ -ability, can 名词字尾，表「能～」｝

* He had slipped from hardness into affability . 他从声色俱厉变得和颜悦色。

★ con fabul ate  vi. 谈话，闲谈

｛ con-, together 一起 ＋ -fabul-, to speak 说 ＋ -ate, cause to be 动词字尾，「使～」 → 一起说话 → 谈话，闲谈｝

* I’d like to confabulate with my friends at weekends. 我喜欢和我的朋友在周末时闲谈。

★ inef fab le   adj. 说不出的，难以言语形容的；说不得的

｛ in-, not 表否定，「不，没，无」 ＋ ef-, out 出来 ＋ -fab-, to speak 说 ＋ (ab)le, can 能～的 → 不能说出来的｝

* He put on a look of ineffable distress. 他摆出一副说不出多么伤感的表情。

* The name of the God is ineffable . 神的名字是忌讳说的。

★ fam ous  adj. 著名的，出名的

｛ fam-, to speak 说 ＋ -ous, full of 形容词字尾，表「多～的」 → 讲得多就是有名的 → 著名的，出名的｝

* He was a famous novelist. 他是一位著名的小说家。

｛ fam-, to speak 说 ＋ -e 字尾 → 名声｝

※ 源自中古英语 fame ← 古法语 fame ← 拉丁语 fama, talk 谈话 ← 同缘字 fari, to speak 说

* She won her overnight fame by her first novel. 她的第一部小说一问世，便使她一举成名。

☆ in famous  adj. 声名狼藉的，臭名昭著的；无耻的

｛ in-, not 表否定，「不，没，无」 ＋ famous 出名的 → 因不好的事情而出名 → 声名狼藉的，臭名昭著的；无耻的｝

* The king was infamous for his guilt of many infamies. 那个国王因罪恶多端而臭名昭著。

* I was shocked by her infamous behavior. 我对她的无耻行为大为震惊。

☆ infam y  n. 无名誉，恶名昭彰；可耻的行为

｛ -y, condition, state, quality 名词字尾，表「情形，状况或性质」｝

* His name will live in infamy . 他的名字将于耻辱共存。

★ de fam e  vt. 诽谤，中伤

｛ de-, not 表否定 ＋ fame 名声 → 对别人的名声加以否定 → 诽谤，中伤｝

* The article is an attempt to defame an honest man. 这篇文章旨在诋毁一个正直的人。

☆ defam ation  n. 诽谤

｛ -ation, action or process 名词字尾，表「行为或过程」｝

* This is pure slander and I’ll sue him for defamation if he doesn’t apologize. 这纯属污蔑，如果他不向我道歉，我就控告他诽谤。 {slander [ 5slBndL ] n. 诽谤，污蔑 }

☆ defam atory   adj. 破坏名誉的，诽谤的

｛ -atory, 形容词字尾，表「～的」｝

* An imputation against a woman’s chastity is defamatory . 诋毁妇女贞操是破坏妇女名誉的行为。 {imputation [ ImpjJ5teFEn ] n. 诋毁； chastity [ 5tFAstEtI ] n. 贞操 }

★ in fan t  n. 婴儿 adj. 幼稚的；初期的

｛ in-, not 不 ＋ -fan-, to speak 说 ＋ -(an)t, person 人 → 不会说话的人 → 婴儿 → 幼稚的；初期的｝

* My sister’s infant is very lovely. 我姐姐的小婴儿非常可爱。 (n.)

* Although he is fifty years old, he looks infant . 尽管他已经 50 了，但看上去很幼稚。 (adj.)

* The information industry is an infant industry in our country. 信息产业在我国是新兴产业。 (adj.)

☆ infan t ry   n. 步兵，步兵部队

｛ infant 初期的 ＋ -ry (=-ery) state of 名词字尾，表「状态」 → 在军队里处于初级地位的 → 步兵，步兵部队｝

* Infantry still plays an important part in war. 步兵在战争中仍然起着重要的作用。

★ pre fat ory   adj. 前言的，序文的

｛ pre-, before 在前面 ＋ -fat-, to speak 说 ＋ -ory, of, relating to 形容词字尾，表「～的，与～有关的」 → 说在前面的 → 前言的，序文的｝

* “No pains, no gains.” he warned in a prefatory note. “不劳不获。”他在引言性的题词中说。

★ con fess  v. 承认；坦白，招认；忏悔，听取～忏悔

｛ con-, all 全部 ＋ -fess, to speak 说 → 全部说出来 → 承认，坦白，供认｝

* She confessed to stealing the money. 她承认偷了钱。 (vi.)

* The prisoner refused to confess his crime. 该罪犯拒不招供罪行。 (vt.)

* The prist confessed the criminal. 神父听取那罪犯的忏悔。 (vt.)

★ pro fess or   n. 教授

｛ pro-, before 在～之前 ＋ -fess, to speak 说 ( → 发言，讲演 ) ＋ -or 名词字尾，表「～人」 → 在众人面前讲演说的人 → 教授｝

* He is a professor of history. 他是位历史学教授。

-atory ，构成名词或形容词，表示「～的，属～的，与～有联系的，有～倾向的」，如：

oral adj . 口头的，口语的 ｛ -al 形容词字尾｝

* migr atory adj . 迁移的，迁徙的；移栖的 ｛ migr- 源自拉丁语 migrare 迁移｝
