magn, maj, maxim

源自拉丁文 magn us, great 大的； maj or, greater 较大的； maxim us, greatest 最大的。

★ magn ificent  adj. 壮丽的，宏伟的

｛ magn-, great 大的 ＋ -i- 连字符 ＋ -fic-, to do 做（业绩） ＋ -ent, 构成形容词字尾，表「～性质的」 → 伟大的业绩 → 壮丽的，宏伟的｝

* We visited the magnificent church. 我们参观了宏伟的教堂。

☆ magnific ence  n. 华丽，富丽堂皇

｛ -ence, state or quality 名词字尾，表「状态或性质」｝

* The Great wall is known for its long history and its magnificence. 长城以其悠久的历史和其雄伟壮丽而著名。

★ magn ify  vt. 放大，扩大；夸大；夸奖，赞美

｛ magn-, great 大的 ＋ -ify (=-fy), to make 动词字尾，表「使～」 → 使变大 → 放大，扩大；夸大；夸奖，赞美｝

* Tony wanted to magnify that picture. 托尼要把那张照片放大。

* Don’t magnify your success. 别夸大你的成绩。

* My soul does magnify the Lord. 我的心确实是赞美上帝的。

★ magn ate  n. 要人，大亨，巨头

｛ magn-, great 伟大的 ＋ -ate, person 名词字尾，表「～人」 → 要人，大亨，巨头｝ cf . gradu ate ( 毕业生 ) ， candid ate ( 候选人 ) ， leg ate ( 使者，使节 ) ， advoc ate ( 辩护者 )

★ magn iloquent adj. 夸张的，言过其实的

｛ magn-, great 大的 ＋ -i- 连字符 ＋ -loqu-, to speak 说话 ＋ -ent, 构成形容词字尾，表「行为或性质」 → 说大话的 → 夸张的，言过其实的｝ cf . loqu acious ( 多话 的， 饶舌的 )

* In his writing, there are many magniloquent word. 他的写作里使用了大量的华丽辞藻。

☆ magniloqu ence  n. 夸夸其谈，虚夸

｛ -ence, the act or quality 名词字尾，表「行为或性质」｝

★ maj or  adj. 较大的；主要的 n. 专业 vi. 主修

* The majority of people seem to prefer TV to radio. 多数人喜欢电视胜过广播。

★ maj esty  n. 宏伟，庄严；陛下

☆ majest ic  adj. 雄伟的，壮丽的，威严的

｛ majest(y) 宏伟，庄严 ＋ -ic, relating to 形容词字尾，表「～的」 → 雄伟的，壮丽的，威严的｝

* In the distance rose the majestic Alps. 远处耸立着雄伟的阿尔卑斯山。

★ maxim um  n. & adj. 最大量（的），最大值（的）

｛ maxim-, greatest 最大的 ＋ -um, 名词字尾｝

* This hall holds a maximum of seventy people. 这厅最多能容纳七十人。 (n.)

* The maximum load for this lorry is one ton. 这辆卡车最大载重量是一吨。 (adj.)

★ maxim  n. 格言，箴言

* “No pains, no gains” is her favorite maxim . 「不劳不获」是她喜爱的格言。

* -tude 来自拉丁语抽象名词字尾，相当于英语的 -ness ，又如：
